Sun Damage and Skin Tone

Whenever we spend time outside, we are exposed to the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Dark brown spots, or age spots, often emerge, giving the skin an uneven appearance. Once brown spots appear, they can be difficult – but not impossible – to erase. Fortunately, there are photo-facial rejuvenation treatments available at our Novato medical spa that can remove sun spots and lighten pigmented areas.

Common Treatment for Sun-Damaged Skin

From creams to advanced laser technology, there are a range of products and treatments that have been developed to address discoloration due to sun damage.

Over-The-Counter Lotions and Creams. Go to the cosmetic counter and you will see a variety of lotions and creams that have been formulated to address hyperpigmentation. However, when it comes to removing sun spots, topical creams may not be the most effective and efficient solution. It can take time to see results and many skin types are not responsive at all.

Chemical Peels. Brown spots, freckles, and other discolorations can be lightened with a chemical peel, a treatment that involves the application of a penetrating chemical solution to the skin. Chemical peels, which cause the skin to blister and peel, can vary in strength and are categorized based on intensity. While they can improve the texture of skin, chemical peels are not appropriate for all skin tones.

Laser Treatment. Intense pulsed light treatment (IPL) uses laser technology to address certain imperfections of the skin–including facial hyperpigmentation and discolorations (rosacea, melasma, freckles, sun and age spots). Advanced fractional non-ablative devices, such as the Palomar Icon platform, can polish and rejuvenate the texture and tone of sun-damaged skin.
